Spring Stomp Hoedown - A Night to Remember

Boot-scootin' Country Fun For All

On Saturday 30 August, The Place came alive with the sound of fiddles, guitars, and stomping boots as people of all ages and abilities gathered for the Spring Stomp Hoedown. It was a night of country music and dancing and a celebration of what community looks like when diversity and inclusion take centre stage.

Hosted by participants of the Place Based Abilities Program, the Hoedown reflected the heart of this initiative: creating opportunities for neurodivergent young people to build skills, confidence, and community connections in a supportive, welcoming environment. There was enthusiasm, open hearts, and a love of fun abound.

Everyone Belonged on the Dance Floor

Guided by instructors from MJ’s Line Dance and Dancin’ Fun Line Dance, the crowd learned everything from boot-scootin’ line dances to rock ’n’ roll barn moves, with a dash of fireball thrown in for good measure. Some participants danced the night away with cowboy hats tipped high, while others preferred to watch, clap along, or step in when the mood struck. It was a night that truly honoured the idea that inclusion means everyone gets to participate, in their own way.

Food, Music, and a Place to Breathe

Local favourites Honey Duo (Aaron and Chloe) provided the soundtrack with live country tunes that had toes tapping from the first chord. Free hot dogs and western-themed finger foods kept everyone fuelled, while a quiet room offered a calm retreat with country crafts for anyone needing a sensory break.

A Space That Brings People Together

Events like the Spring Stomp Hoedown show the power of The Place as a hub where connection thrives, where young people and older community members, families and friends, newcomers and regulars all come together.

Looking Ahead

The Hoedown may be over, but its spirit carries forward in the ongoing programs and events at The Place. The Place Based Abilities Program will continue to create opportunities for young people to shine, while The Place remains committed to being a welcoming community space for everyone.

As the last notes of Honey Duo’s set faded and the final boots shuffled off the dance floor, one thing was clear: when music, inclusion, and community come together, something truly special happens.

As we reach the end of another year, I want to take a moment to reflect on all that we have achieved together. 2025 has been a year of connection, resilience, and community spirit at The Place Charlestown Community Centre. Whether you participated in a program, volunteered your time, partnered with us, or simply walked through our doors with a smile, your contribution has helped make our Centre a welcoming and vibrant space for all. This year has also highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by many in our community. Cost-of-living pressures, social isolation, and complex life circumstances continue to impact people in different ways. Yet, despite these realities, we have witnessed incredible compassion, generosity, and strength from individuals and groups across our community. As we enter the festive season, I encourage everyone to take the time to “fill your cup”, to rest, recharge, and spend time with those who lift you up. It’s important to look after ourselves so that we can continue to support others. At the same time, Christmas can be a difficult period for many. There are those who may be grieving, feeling lonely, or facing financial or emotional hardship. Let’s keep these community members in our thoughts and extend kindness wherever we can. A small gesture, a smile, a conversation, a check-in, a helping hand, can make a far bigger difference than we realise. Thank you for being part of our community this year. Your presence enriches The Place and strengthens the fabric of connection we are proud to foster. We look forward to sharing a new year filled with possibility, hope, and continued collaboration. Wishing you a safe, peaceful, and meaningful holiday season. Cristelle and the team at The Place
